Alldales Hosts Technology Day aboard HMS Belfast

Significant energy and operational cost savings can be achieved by implementing integrated HVAC systems incorporating variable speed drives, as well as making commissioning and maintenance easier.

That was the message from a recent Technology Day led by Alldales Drive Systems. Held aboard HMS Belfast, the event attracted considerable industry interest both from Facilities Managers in major organisations as well as consultants, HVAC contractors and controls companies keen to find out what the latest technologies have to offer.

Designed to operate even in the worst case scenario, HVAC systems often operate with excess capacity, with motors running at full pitch. The Technology Seminar/Workshop focused on how using variable speed drives to regulate motor speeds to match capacity requirements may prove more efficient in comparison with traditional methods such as valves, dampers or vanes. Seminar leaders Alldales Drive Systems explained the mathematics behind the technology, otherwise known as ‘the law of the cube’. The event also allowed delegates the chance to discuss the advantages of an integrated solution in relation to specific HVAC applications such as cooling towers and hot/cold water pumps with a view to assessing in practical terms the energy savings achievable.

A key topic reviewed at the seminar was the increased flexibility of HVAC system design in retrofitting made possible by the all-in-one nature of the latest variable speed drives. Today’s technology means less wiring, fewer components and I/O connections which also speeds up commissioning and simplifies maintenance.

As well as explaining how space can be saved through remote running, the Technology Day gave delegates a chance to catch up with the improved data gathering potential of an integrated HVAC system. Modern variable speed drives, explained Alldales, are compatible across a range of Building Management control module types and can be linked to a common bus using serial communications to provide full monitoring and control together with trend analysis and energy usage reports where required.
